Season Summary:
The 1999 season was one filled with expectations for the young Wild Boar squad.  The team was returning only three seniors and so relied heavily on large and talented groups in the 4th and 5th forms (sophomore and junior classes) to help carry the team for the season.  In addition to Captains Jeremy Hynd '00 and Nessim Mezrahi '00 and John LaBanca '00, the most experienced of the seniors, the team was counting on returning goalkeeper Chris Beck '01 and returning high-scorer from the 1998 campaign Greg Marvin-Smith as well as key player Adam Rahal '01 and many others to support the team.

In preparation for the season and with a commitment to improve, Coach Currie arranged a demanding schedule including an invitation to the prestigious Cardinal Tournament hosted by Greenwich High School which has traditionally brought together many of the best team in the Eastern and New England Conferences.  Choate expected a difficult run in this tournament but wouldn't back away from the challenges and opportunities for improvement in a field of vastly more experienced players from the likes of the host school, Navy Aquatic Club and Wilson High School in West Lawn, PA.

Additionally, in a quirk of scheduling, the Wild Boars spent nearly the entire season on the road with only three home dates during the 22 game season. Hopefully we will be able to avoid such problems in the future.

Looking back now, the season was successful in many ways though there were too many missed opportunities to walk away fully satisfied.  We won only one of the close ones, but the experience was not lost on our young squad.  Defeat in the opening round of the Final 8 Championship at Deerfield was heartbreaking but the team came back to soundly defeat its next two opponents to start a win streak for next year. 

Having 5th former (junior) Greg Marvin-Smith '01 named to the All-Tournament team was an honor that hints at the teams potential for the future. It has been very rare indeed in recent years for a player not on one of the top three teams to earn such recognition.
