Record: 17-4 (15-2 in NE Prep School league)
2nd place in New England
2nd place at Wilton Y shootout

The fall of 2000 represents the most successful season ever for Boys water polo at Choate. The squad entered the season full of promise and with more players than ever having made significant preparation for the fall. With strong leadership by the seniors, an excellent squad was forming. The season was not without setbacks, however. The loss of 1999 starter Brian Medlin '02 to a chronic shoulder problem before the season even started reminded the others of the work yet to be done. Other players needed to step up and did. Under the leadership and excellent play of Captain Adam Rahal '01, Choate has amassed one of the best seasons in recent prep school play. After opening the season with a narrow loss to defending NE Champion Exeter, the team did not lose again to a NEPSAC team in the regular season. On the way, Greg Marvin-Smith '01, the team's scoring leader in his sophomore and junior years, scored 85 times for the Boars and shattered the old single season scoring mark of 66. He also established a new career scoring mark of 171 goals. Chris Beck '01, our three year starting goalkeeper also had an outstanding season in which he tied the single season saves mark of 200 and bested the old career saves mark by nearly 150 as he advanced the bar to 559. Owen Dailey '02 and Andrew Stowe '01 were other essential components for the success of the team. Boys water polo again this year claimed the title as the first team in the school to beat Deerfield and handled most others as well. We made it to the finals of the Wilton Y Shootout and the Final 8 tournament where the New England Champions are crowned. In a season where the team only lost to two teams, Exeter and the team from the Wilton Y, they only needed to come from behind once. Interestingly, Choate drew an underrated squad from Andover in the opening round of the Final 8's. As Choate entered that tournament down two starters (Owen Dailey and Brett Marinelli '03 were both out due to illness), the team felt some anxiety facing their opponent from their closest win of the season only a week before. The game was predictably close as Andover showed the impressive improvement they had managed during the season to other in the crowd. The teams fought hard through overtime and kept the score knotted. In the most dramatic finish in recent years, Adam Rahal drove and scored with 6 seconds remaining in the first sudden death period to end the game. More exhilarated than tired, Choate opened the next round by scoring 4 goals in a 1:12 to take control of the game against a strong Loomis team. In the final, Choate fell to a powerful and fired up Exeter squad, providing disappointing bookends to an excellent season. Promise for the future comes from some outstanding younger players including Tim Rausch '04 who saw time in 19 varsity games as a freshman. More impressive than all of the honors and records though, is the exceptional quality of character, dedication and good sportsmanship displayed by this year's team. As a team, they have set a mark for all to follow.

2000 Season Game Summaries

9/13/00: Scrimmage at Suffield: no official score
The whole squad traveled to Suffield for the traditional season-opening scrimmage. The Boars, some of them in the water for only the third day, were eager to get into a game situation. While no official score was kept, it was well into the third period of play before the more experienced Boars let up a score other than a penalty shot. There are still plenty of kinks to work out but the team came together well and controlled the pool with both the more and less experienced squads. Though there has not yet been a varsity/J.V. distinction drawn, even the least experienced players among the 2000 Boar squad made a strong showing. Thrust into cage in only his fourth day of practice at this new sport, new student Carey Turnquest '03 made an impressive showing. Others on the team also made a strong statement with goals and strong defensive play from the new players as well as returners. This squad held the opponents scoreless in two of three periods played. It was a good day.

9/16/00: Exeter @ WNS: Exeter 8, Choate 4
As has become the tradition over the last ten years, The Choate Wild Boars opened the Water Polo season against Exeter at Williston Northampton School. Choate comes into the season with a lot of potential but also still coming together and responding to some injuries that players brought into the season. Nonetheless, the Boars were ready to go after defending Final 8 Champions Exeter. A couple of missed opportunities early in the period emphasized the roughness of the team from Wallingford. Exeter got on the board about 45 s into the period but the Boars played strong defense and kept the other team off balance as well. Andrew Stowe '01 scored with only three seconds remaining in the first to tie the game at the period break. In the second, Choate played defense well but Exeter took advantage of a man-up situation to break the tie. They scored again with 2:41 left in the period to open a 3-1 lead at the half. The Boars were still in the game mentally though and ready to go for it. An odd call that led to an ejection for Choate keeper Chris Beck '01 led to Exeter second man-up goal. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 got the Boars back on the board for the first time in two periods. The Boars gave up another though in the third and the Boars trailed 5-2 at the end of the third. The fourth was hard fourth on both sides. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 was tenacious and tallied two more. Unfortunately, Exeter marked three in the period, including one with a second left and the Boars ended down 4-8.
Despite the loss, there were some signs of life and better things to come. Chris Beck '01 played well in cage with 9 saves. The team showed confidence and tenacity that will serve them well in the weeks to come.

9/16/00: WNS @ WNS: Choate 9, Williston 6
As the Boars entered the amply chlorinated pool at Williston just minutes following their battle with Exeter, burning eyes could not deter them from the challenge ahead. Williston, rested for about an hour and 45 minutes, saw an opening to take the Boars off balance early in the season. An especially emotional game developed as the Boars played against former teammate Tucker Robinson for the first time. Williston came out fast though and got on the board first. Owen Dailey '02 responded emphatically nine seconds later to tie the score. Williston moved the lead again with 43 s remaining in the first. Choate responded immediately again with Mike Lane '01 retaliating ten seconds later and the period ended with a 2-2 tie. Choate got on the board first in the second when Owen Dailey '02 marked in with 3:13 left in the period. Williston retaliated and then capitalized on an ejection to regain the lead. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 put the Boars back into the game by scoring in the final minute to restore the tie at 4-4 at the half. While the Boars eyes had only gotten worse, their resolve had set and they were waiting for the home team at the start of their seventh consecutive period. Captain Adam Rahal '01 broke the tie for the Boars at 1:06 into the third. Williston responded though. Marvin-Smith and Dailey each added another score to give the Boars a 7-5 lead going into the final quarter. Marvin-Smith scored again before Williston scored again. Marvin-Smith put in the games final goal half way through the period and clinching the win for Choate.

9/23/00: Hopkins at CRH: Choate 16, Hopkins 4

Choate was eager to start the home campaign with their traditional home mini-tournament. The day started shortly after classes when Hopkins traveled from New Haven to face the strong Choate team in a very cold Hart Pool. The Boars established themselves early when Greg Marvin-Smith '01 got the home team on the board 23 seconds into the game. With excellent defense that supported an enthusiastic offense, the home team took control of the came convincingly. Marvin-Smith added another before Captain Adam Rahal '01 and Aaron Smith '02 got on the board to give the Boars a 4-0 lead at the end of the period. Marvin-Smith got things going again in the second and was joined by Tim Rausch '04 and Owen Dailey '02. The defense remained in control and the Hopkins squad was still scoreless at the half, trailing 0-7. In the third, a goal by Andrew Stowe '01 and two more by an on-fire Marvin-Smith moved the boars to a 10 goal lead before Hopkins got on the board. Hopkins took advantage of a penalty throw to finally put one past Keeper Chris Beck '01 halfway through the third. Stowe marked one more time and so did Hopkins in the waning seconds of the third leaving the score 11-2 in favor of the home team. The final period saw a lot of substitutions from both sides preparing for more games in the day. Choate saw scoring by Dailey (two more), Rausch (two more) and Jamie Lamere '02. Hopkins put in two more to give a final score of 16-4 in favor of Choate.

Chris Beck played especially well in cage with 10 saves including a stopped penalty throw. The team was playing well together and has started to take advantage of demanding training.

9/23/00: Suffield at CRH: Choate 11, Suffield 2

Suffield topped Choate twice in the 1999 season and the Boars had not forgotten. The cold pool influenced both teams but Choate's drive was undiminished. The Boars were focused on balanced team play with an emphasis on defense. That strategy worked well as the Boars took control of the game early in the first and never looked back. Greg Marvin-Smith '01, having an exceptional day already, started things off putting a ball in the cage a minute into the game. Aaron Smith '02, also playing well for the day, marked for Choate's second and Marvin-Smith added a third in the period. Choate's excellent defensive effort gave the team a 3-0 lead at the end of the period against the Suffield squad. The visitors were not going to give up though and scored first in the second period to narrow the lead to two goals. The Boars responded with a scoring onslaught. In the next two and a half minutes, Choate put the ball past the keeper five more times. Owen Dailey '02 scored twice while Andrew Stowe '01, Captain Adam Rahal '01 and Mike Lane '01 each added one. The home squad led 8-1 at the half which was, as in the previous game, a reflection of a strong defensive effort. The third saw some rough play which lead to several ejections. Choate defended the man advantage well, though, and neither side was on the board early. Marvin-Smith put in another in the third before Suffield took advantage of another Choate ejection and put one past Chris Beck '01 in goal. Owen Dailey tagged again to end the scoring for the period. The score was 10-2 to tend the third. The final period saw a great deal of substitution for both sides and some energetic but less organized play. Aaron Smith did get on the board one more time in the final seconds to close out the game with an 11-2 win for the home squad.

Chris Beck '01 played well again in cage with seven saves on 10 shots. Overall, it was a strong defensive day for the Boars. The team is preparing for more challenging games out of league as they face perennial powerhouse Greenwich High on Wed. at the Hart Pool.

9/27/00: Greenwich H.S. at CRH no game

Many people were eagerly anticipating the start of today's game against Greenwich High. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were waiting in Greenwich. Failing to recall that it was their turn to travel after the Boars visited last fall, the Greenwich team did not realize their mistake in time to make the game. We hope the game can be rescheduled, though the busy game schedule for the Boars makes the odds look slim.

9/29/00: Wilton YMCA at CRH Choate 7, Wilton Y 15

Having been stood up by Greenwich two days before, the Boars were concerned when Wilton Y had not arrived at game time. It was only traffic this time, though and Wilton was there and ready to play. The pool was still cold, though we're looking for heat soon. After a brief session that would be difficult to call a warm-up given the temperature, the game got under way. Choate was ready to go and got off to a good start. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 got Choate on the scoreboard at a minute ten into the period. As the teams figured each other out, there was energetic play on both sides of the ball. Owen Dailey '02 was the next to capitalize and put Choate ahead 2-0. Wilton responded as the Boars struggled to take advantage of opportunities and tied the game 2-2 at the end of the first. The game was hard-fought and keeper Chris Beck '01 played spectacularly with 8 saves on 10 shots. A physical second period favored the powerful Wahoo squad, as Choate was unable to play their game through the physical onslaught. Wilton scored 5 unanswered goals to establish control of the game. Andrew Smith '01 put in Choate's only goal for the period with one second remaining. Choate managed only 5 shots in the period. Choate worked to regroup at the half-time break and returned to the pool but Wilton had learned some lessons on handling the Boars and scored 45 more quick goals in the first half of the third. Choate struggled to maintain morale but never gave up, though the water certainly felt colder than ever suddenly. The egos of the home team may have been damaged but the spirit was never broken. Marvin-Smith got back on the board with 2:40 left and Aaron Smith '02 converted the man-up with 5 seconds remaining in the period. Choate trailed by a 5-12 score as they entered the water for the final period. Wilton hole set Spencer Dineen '01 put in two more goals at the start of the fourth and Wilton put another in the cage to extend the lead to 5-15 at a minute and a half into the period. Captain Adam Rahal '01 scored with a strong shot with 2:309 left and Owen Dailey tallied one more time to bring the Boars to a final score of 7-15. Chris Beck had the best day for the home team with strong play in cage throughout and 17 saves on the day.

The loss was tough for a Choate squad that has been enjoying a successful season so far. It was, however, a valuable lesson as the team faced a team from outside the league with more experience and talent than most of our competition. It wasn't fun but it was a good learning experience. We hope to see Wilton again in a couple of weeks when we travel to their tournament. On deck next is the always challenging traditional rival Deerfield at Choate on Wed. Come and cheer on the home team!

10/4/00: Deerfield at CRH Choate 10, Deerfield 2

In a game that was closer than it might at first sound, Choate's traditional rival Deerfield arrived in Wallingford for the first athletic meeting between the two schools this season. Deerfield had superior numbers and Choate came into the game sluggish. The home team did play fine defensively but suffered through one of the worst exhibitions of shooting ever witnessed. The offense was still working well, but the set ups were never finished. Despite all, Mike Lane '01 got the home team on the board first at just under two minutes into the period. Choate's top scorer Greg Marvin-Smith '01 marked two minutes later to give the Boars a 2-0 lead. Deerfield did put one in to bring the visitors close at the end of the first. Choate, having dominated play, was uncomfortable with a 2-1 lead. The team wanted to get things going in the second. Andrew Smith '01 came out and put the ball in for Choate early in the second period. After that, Choate struggled through a dizzying number of missed shots. Choate missed on six more shots while Deerfield only got off one. Choate failed to convert on three man-up situations as well. The home team held to a narrow 3-1 lead at the half. Choate continued to struggle on shooting into the second half. Marvin-Smith put in the next goal for Choate but Deerfield quickly answered. Choate failed to capitalize on two more man-up situations during the third and headed into the final period leading only by a 4-2 margin. The Boars had controlled the defense all game and had enjoyed plenty of opportunities but had failed to execute. In the final, the game seemed more relaxed and the home team got into the flow. Owen Dailey '02 and Andrew Stowe '01 each added a score before Lane got his second of the day in the first two and a half minutes of the final period. Marvin-Smith quickly followed with his third for the day. Though Choate continued to be completely ineffective in converting the extra man advantage situation, Tim Rausch '04 worked off fine passes from Marvin-Smith to put in two more and extend the score to 10-2 in the final minute. The Boys Water Polo squad again holds the honor of being the first Choate team to beat Deerfield. Chris Beck '01 continued the great season that he is enjoying wit another great day. While he had fine defensive help from the field, Beck had 7 saves in cage on 9 shots. Captain Adam Rahal played with enthusiasm and intensity despite suffered a shooting slump that will be memorable on any list.

The Boars face a strong squad from Andover on Saturday and will likely need a better performance to pull out the win.

10/4/00: Deerfield JV at CRH JV Choate JV 17, Deerfield JV 2

Choate has a small squad at the varsity and junior varsity levels this season. That, along with some serious injuries leaves small squads to face the visiting teams. Deerfield brought a large crowd to the Hart Pool today and probably expected that to make a difference for inexperienced players. Choate is thin but not weak, though, and the players made that clear to the visitors from the start. Choate controlled the ball at both ends of the pool. Omar Itum '02 was dogged at both ends of the pool and got the home team on the board first. Brett Marinelli '03 and Aaron Smith '02 each added one while Itum put in a second in the next four and a half minutes of play. Deerfield's keeper was ejected with a minute left in the period and Josh Ho-Walker capitalized to give the home team the 5-0 lead at the end of the first. Choate continued to dominate in the second period with Marinelli marking again 15 seconds into play. Like the varsity, the JV struggled to convert the man-up opportunities but Marinelli got things clicking and put in another. A second major of the Deerfield keeper allowed Perry Bullock '04 to convert with three minutes left. Itum scored again with a minute remaining to move the Boars ahead 9-0 at the half. Choate focused on setting up an offense and continuing to control the defense for the remainder of the game. Ho-Walker marked again a minute and a half into the third. Aaron Smith's ejection four minutes into the period opened the door, though and Deerfield converted. Itum returned the favor by converting a Deerfield ejection with a minute and a half left in the period. Deerfield came back with a full strength goal in the final five seconds of the period to put the score at 12-2 going into the final period. While the Boars failed to convert the first man up opportunity of the fourth but Josh Ho-Walker did on the second. This was followed closely by another score by Itum. Rob Krohn '01 got on the board next and Marinelli put up another. Perry Bullock put up his second score of the day and Aaron Smith finished things off with the Boars ahead 17-2. Carey Turnquest, new to the game this season and developing his play in goal had an excellent inaugural outing with six saves on 8 shots. Jacobo Chiu '02 was an important contributor while Alex Wentworth-Ping '04 and Claude Giampietro '04 played impressively in their first effort. The team looked strong and eagerly awaits Andover on Saturday.

10/07/00: Andover JV at CRH JV Choate JV 13, Andover JV 3

Fresh off a convincing win over Deerfield's JV, the Boars were ready to face the squad from Andover. Choate's small squad was not worried by Andover's superior numbers and the 9 players there today were up to the challenge. The game got off to a slow start. Tim Rausch '04 got things going early in the quarter with the games first goal, but things stagnated after that and failed to capitalize on two man up opportunities and the period. Choate struggled with its shooting a bit and Andover only got off two shots under a strong defensive press by the home team. Things remained quiet in the second. Andover knotted the score at 1-1 but Jacobo Chiu '02 quickly moved Choate back ahead. Neither side managed much of an offense for the majority of the period. Things started to look up when Adam Packer '01 got the Boars back on the board in the final minute, moving to a 3-1 lead. Andover answered right back, though and closed to a one point deficit and the teams went into the break 3-2 in favor of the home team. In the third, Choate opened things up convincingly with complete control at both ends of the pool. Goals by Rausch, Chiu, Josh Ho-Walker '02, Omar Itum '02, Perry Bullock '04, and two by Jamie Lamere '02 moved the Boars ahead 9-2 at the end of the third. Lamere scored again and Rausch took advantage of two more opportunities before Ho-Walker put in Choate's final goal of the game. Andover put one more in in the final 20 seconds to finish the scoring 13-3 in favor of the home team. Choate managed an impressive defensive showing and Carey Turnquest '03 had another great day in cage with 8 saves on 11 shots. The squad was in fine form and played hard throughout despite slim numbers. Due to problems arranging officials, the JV game was moved earlier in the day and Choate's head coach Todd Currie had to take on reffing responsibilities for the game.

10/07/00: Andover at CRH Choate 13, Andover 9

The 4-1 Choate squad welcomed the 4-2 team from Andover in an important showdown at the Hart pool today. The game was moved to a later slot to allow and official to arrive from an earlier game. Both teams were ready to play and Choate came out looking for a better shooting day than they had on Wednesday. The home team came out hard and took control early. Captain Adam Rahal '01 marked for the Boars at a minute and 20 seconds into the game. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 started off an outstanding day shooting with two more goals following quickly on Rahal's. Andover didn't get on the board until nearly five minutes into the game when they moved to a 3-1 score. Rahal came back with emphasis and scored two more before the end of the period to extend the Choate lead to 5-1 at the end of the first. Choate struggled more in the second and Andover got back two goals to narrow the margin to two before Rahal put in another to set the score at 6-3 at the half. A fired up Choate squad was eager to get back to play, though a series of unforeseen ejections kept the home team on its toes. Owen Dailey '02 got Choate back on the board only twenty seconds into the third. Marvin-Smith put in another goal before Andover managed to touch the back of the cage again. Marvin-Smith, on fire for the day, scored three more times for the home team and moved Choate to an 11-4 lead at the end of the third. Things became even more unpredictable as the Boars went into the final period with intensity and desire. The calls were confusing on several occasions, but the home team kept after it. After Choate moved to a 13-7 lead on two more by Marvin-Smith, Andover got on the board two more times in the waning minutes to pull within four. Choate's victory was hard won and strong at 13-4. Chris Beck had another exceptional day in cage with 11 saves. Choate is back on the road next week, traveling to Northfield Mount Hermon in a preview of the Boars Parents weekend game.

10/11/00: CRH at Northfield Mount Hermon Choate 14, NMH 2

Choate made one of its few road trips this season when it undertook the long travel to NMH for a Wednesday game. Choate has been playing well and NMH is facing a rebuilding year. Choate was relaxed and ready to start the game. The Hoggers came out hard but Choate clearly was in command. Moving to a 5-0 lead by half way through the first period, Choate's effort was convincing. Choate rotated players and all 16 field players who traveled saw time before the period was out. Choate's 7-0 lead came on scores by Captain Adam Rahal '01 (2), scoring leader Greg Mavin-Smith '01, Owen Dailey '02, Brett Marinelli '03, Rob Krohn '01 and Jamie Lamere '02. More focus on defense and controlling the tempo of the game came in subsequent periods. In the second, Marvin-Smith added another as did Dailey and Marinelli to move the lead to 10-0 less than three minutes into the second. For the second half, novice Keeper Carey Turnquest '03 replaced Chris Beck in cage and played well. The team continued to control the defensive end and worked on developing the offensive patterning required for future play. Lamere scored again and was followed by goals by Marvin-Smith and Mike Lane '01. Choate closed the period 13-0. Northfield finally got on the board at just over two minutes into the fourth period as Turnquest got his legs in the deep end. They struck again later in the period. Lamere got one more shot that he couldn't pass up in the final minute of the game to leave a final score of 14-2 in favor of Choate.

Chris Beck played well in the two periods he saw time. Choate's team defense was strong allowing only ten shots in the entire game. The team scored on 14 of 22 shots and played convincingly as they prepared for the Wilton Tourney this weekend. The Boars enter seeded #2 and are looking forward to challenging out of league play.

10/14/00: CRH v. Wilton B at Wilton Y Tournament Choate 9, Wilton B 0

Choate entered the Wilton Y Shootout as the #2 seed behind the host team's A squad. The tournament is played over Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning in a nod to Sat. morning SAT's. Choate waited through a long Saturday before getting a chance to play in the final game of the opening round against #7 seed Wilton B. Choate was eager when they got into the water and, despite a series of offensive miscues, took control in the game against the younger, though experienced players. In a tough start to his game, Choate's high scorer Greg Marvin-Smith '01 missed on three good opportunities. Veterans Andrew Stowe '01 and Owen Dailey '02 helped out along with Captain Adam Rahal '01 to move the Boars to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. Wilton got off only two shots in the period, both stopped ably by keeper Chris Beck '01. The second was much the same with the exception that Marvin-Smith regained his touch and would not miss another shot in the game. He scored two in the second and Rahal added another. Throughout the game, Choate was changing players to build experience and so a consistent effort never really formed. The team again limited the opponents to two shots and led 6-0 at the half. The third saw two more goals for Marvin-Smith and another for Dailey to end the scoring for the game. Wilton B took six shots in the second half and Beck stopped everything that came his way. Choate played for control and kept things well in hand though the remainder of the game. The win sent Choate into play within the top four the next morning.

10/15/00: CRH v. St. Benedict's Prep at Wilton Y Tournament Choate 7, St. Benedict's 5

Choate's defeat of Wilton B and #6 seeded St. Benedict's upset of #3 Gilman set up a rematch of a game from the 1999 Cardinal Tournament where the team from Newark came from behind to beat the boys from Wallingford. St. Benedict's relies heavily on outstanding play from senior Mark Servidio who had led the attack on Choate the year before. Choate knew that they needed to control Servidio to control the game. In play that would foreshadow problems to come, the normally strong Choate defense struggled some with this task. Choate moved to a 2-1 lead on goals by Greg Marvin-Smith '01 and Captain Adam Rahal '01. In the second, the Margin held at 3-2 as Owen Dailey '02 tagged one for Choate. In the third, Choate fell a bit flat and struggled to find the cage, though and Joshua Heady scored his third for St. Benedict's in the same period that Servidio finally got on the board. Choate trailed for the first time in the game in the third by a score of 3-4. Tired but undaunted, Choate came roaring back. They fought through officiating which confused them at times and regained control. Rahal scored twice and Dailey scored again to move Choate back into command of the game. Servidio got away again and brought St. Benedict's back to within one but Brett Marinelli '03 answered with a beautiful shot on a man-up to give Choate the 7-5 win. Chris Beck '01 had a strong game in cage. Choate was off to the finals to face host team and defending champion Wilton A.

10/15/00: CRH v. Wilton A at Wilton Y Tournament Wilton A 15, Choate 9

Wilton had dismantled Choate at the Hart Pool a couple of weeks earlier but Choate was back with a game plan and ready to execute. The team knew it would need a good day shooting and defensive control of Wilton standouts Spencer Dinnean '01 (1999 tourney MVP) and Garrett Smith '02. Losing standout Andrew Smith '01 to a shoulder injury made the job more difficult but not insurmountable. It all fell apart quickly, though, as Wilton came out rested and ready and on their game. Dinnean scored four in the first before being ejected with three fouls ( 2 drawn by Greg Marvin-Smith '01) part way through the period. Choate sensed an opening but Marvin-Smith (and much of the Choate squad) was having his own foul trouble having picked up two early in the first. Garrett Smith picked up where Dinnean left off and controlled the game at both ends. Greg Marvin-Smith did come alive more as the period went on, putting two into the net. Owen Dailey '02 contributed one as did Brett Marinelli '03. The Boars trailed 4-7 at the end of the first though. Garrett Smith went on a rampage in the second, though. He scored 5 in the second and accounted for Wilton's entire effort. Marvin-Smith got on the board for one but the Boars were well out of it 5-12 at the half. The team looked tired and frustrated. Wilton added three more (one of them by Garrett Smith) in the third. Marvin-Smith added two more and Dailey one for Choate. Marvin-Smith was trying mightily to get something started but an ambitious effort late in the third earned him his third ejection for the game and he had to sit down. The fourth period was marked by a lot of swimming and aggressive play but little real offense. Mike Lane '01 fouled out as well. Chris Beck, who had suffered two periods of the worst play he has out up in years in the start of the game, finally came alive and got back on his game with 7 saves in the final two periods. Despite the disappointing finish to the tournament, Choate was pleased with the second place finish and an overall good effort at the tournament. Greg Marvin-Smith earned All-Tournament honors and Adam Rahal earned second team All-Tournament recognition. Congratulations. Choate is back in the Hart Pool on Tuesday to face perennial rival Loomis Chaffee.

10/17/00: Loomis Chaffee at CRH Choate 11, Loomis 4

Loomis Chaffee was a New England Finalist last year and has traditionally fared well against Choate. Not this time! Loomis arrived at the Hart Pool for an odd Tuesday game and ready to face a Choate team bouncing back after a difficult and tiring weekend. Choate was tired, but ready to play. Choate controlled from the start. They took the opening swim off and controlled the ball until Greg Marvin-Smith '01 put Choate onto the board. Choate was controlling the ball well but misfiring on offense. Marvin-Smith put in another and then good play by Loomis took advantage of a coverage mistake to close the margin to 2-1. Loomis then worked to double team Greg but to no avail. Marvin-Smith, Choate's top scorer for the last three seasons, responded with another score and a hat trick for the period. The first ended with Choate ahead 3-1. To keep things from being a one-man show, Captain Adam Rahal took the ball after the opening swim off and swam it through traffic for a beautiful high corner. As the period progressed, Marvin-Smith would add two more and Owen Dailey would get on the board as well to move Choate ahead decisively in the second. By the half, Choate led by a score of 7-1 and Loomis had put up only four shots. Choate continued to play well as personnel rotated. Owen Dailey stepped up to take control. He scored on a man-up possession off an assist from Rahal and then again just over a minute later to move Choate ahead 9-1. Loomis got on the board again with 14 seconds left and the period ended with Choate ahead 9-2. As things wound down in the fourth, Loomis put in another one. Aaron Smith '02 scored on a penalty throw. Loomis responded but Andrew Stowe '01 closed the scoring for the day and gave Choate the 11-4 victory. Chris Beck '01 had another good day in cage where he has been a controlling force all season. He had 9 saves on 13 shots. Choate now prepares for the closest team to them, Hotchkiss, where they will head on Saturday for the opponent's parents' weekend.

10/18/00: Choate J.V. at Suffield Choate J.V. 23, Suffield J.V. 4

Choate's J.V. Squad traveled to Suffield. With only 11 players making the trip, Choate gave away a lot in numbers but made up for any loss with a talented squad. Choate controlled throughout. In the first, two goals by Jamie Lamere '02 and others by Josh Ho-Walker '02, Tim Rausch '04, Jacobo Chiu '02 and Brett Marinelli '03 moved Choate to a 6-1 lead. In the second, Aaron Smith '02 put in three while Ho-Walker and Omar Itum '02 each added two. Marinelli and Lamere each scored again. Suffield put in two but Choate was ahead 15-3. Choate moved to a more control game in the second half. Marinelli scored once for the team to balance Suffield's score. In the final period, Choate kept looking to play control but the team was working too well. Alex Wentworth-Ping '04 scored two and Ho-Walker, Lamere, Chiu, Marinelli and Smith each added a goal to close out the game 23-4. Perry Bullock '04 played hard but fell ill part way through the game. Claude Giampietro '04 didn't get on the board but made a significant contribution to the team. Carey Turnquest '03 played well in cage with four saves on only nine shots.

10/21/00: Choate at Hotchkiss Choate 10, Hotchkiss 9

Hotchkiss set a tone when, at half-time of the football game on Friday night, they had players dressed as Choate water polo players being attacked and beaten up by Hotchkiss players. Though they made a valiant effort at carrying through on that plan, Choate proved to be the better team on the day. In a battle of talented teams and different styles of play 7-1 Choate traveled to 6-1 Hotchkiss for Hotchkiss' Parents weekend. Both teams were up for a good game and the result did not disappoint. In a physical game, Choate was often off guard about what was being called and not called, but they fought through nonetheless. Choate drew a kick out early but struggled to capitalize until Greg Marvin-Smith '01 finally got off a good shot and got the Boars on the board at 1:11 into the game. Another Hotchkiss ejection led to another opportunity, which Choate struggled before answering, this time by Owen Dailey '02. Andrew Stowe '01 moved the visitors to a three-goal lead by half way through the first, but no one was counting out the home team. Hotchkiss' #2 answered with two goals to get his team back into the game late in the period and Hotchkiss felt a change in momentum despite trailing 2-3 at the end of the period. They came out with renewed physicality but Choate was not done. They controlled most of the second period. When Hotchkiss didn't defend Tim Rausch '04, he made them pay. Marvin-Smith was back on the board in the second and Captain Adam Rahal '01 put in Choate's third goal of the period with only six seconds remaining. While the clock had been erratic all game (and would be all day); the next events stunned all but the home team. Hotchkiss played well out of the set and scored. Choate took the ball in and played it through, missed on a shot and Hotchkiss sent the ball back full pool for a second goal with one second still remaining. A lot to happen in only five seconds. Choate still led 6-4 at the half, though they were a bit rattled and confused. They came back, though, ready to play. They physical game continued as both teams struggled to get an offense in control. Hotchkiss broke the ice near the middle of the third and closed to within one. The score held for over three minutes when Marvin-Smith put one past the keeper. Hotchkiss answered again, though and trailed by only one at the end of the third, 6-7. Both teams were ready to go in the final period. Hotchkiss tied the game a minute into the final period. Jamie Lamere '02 put Choate back on top a minute later. The energetic Hotchkiss squad answered almost immediately and the score was knotted at 8 halfway through the final period. Stowe scored again for Choate but Hotchkiss responded on the next possession to tie the score at 9 with 1:45 remaining. On the next possession, Choate drew an ejection and, in beautiful team play, capitalized to go ahead 10-9. Hotchkiss fought hard but the Choate defense was up to the task and stopped the home team. Choate won the game 10-9 and was happy to head home.

10/21/00: Choate JV at Hotchkiss JV Hotchkiss J.V, 11, Choate J.V. 8

In a battle of unbeaten J.V. squads, there is certain to be a lot of pride on the line. Today was no exception. Choate's small numbers have not been a big issue in the past but today, in the face of a larger (in number and size) and faster team, the experienced Choate J.V. was up against it. Choate's experience worked well early. The team played well together and Aaron Smith '02 scored twice for Choate in the first minute. Then Hotchkiss figured out how to use a speed mismatch to their advantage and scored five unanswered goals in less than three and a half minutes. This would prove to be the difference. Josh Ho-Walker '02 got Choate back on the board, but Hotchkiss answered again to take a 6-3 lead into the period break. The inconsistent clock didn't help the tired Choate squad. At times only seconds would tick off during several possessions. Choate played well in the second though. They fought through the determined and physical style of play that characterizes Hotchkiss and goals by Omar Itum '02 and Aaron Smith narrowed the gap to one. At the half, Choate trailed 5-6. Perry Bullock '04 tied the game just seconds into the third. Hotchkiss returned to their speed and scored four times in the next four minutes to extend to a 10-6 lead. Aaron Smith broke the streak with a minute and a half left but Hotchkiss answered again and took an 11-7 lead into the period break. Itum scored again for Choate at the start of the fourth but from there on in, the game resembled more of a wrestling match. Choate drew two kick outs but didn't capitalize on either of them and the game ended 11-8. Hotchkiss rejoiced, sending both coaches into the pool, but Choate played well and should be proud of the effort under difficult circumstances.

10/25/00: Williston at CRH Choate 14, Williston 7

In a game that promised to be strange, marking the first return of former Choate player Tucker Robinson to the Hart Pool, both squads were there early and prepared for a fight. In the first quarter Choate was clearly dominating play but had trouble converting. Several good opportunities were wasted and on Greg Marvin-Smith '01 got on the board for either team. Each squad blew a man-up opportunity. Choate had gotten a good read from the start though and Chris Beck '01 was clearly on in cage with four saves in the first. The home team took advantage at the start of the second. Captain Adam Rahal '01 scored thirty seconds into the period. Marvin-Smith added another 26 seconds later. Owen Dailey '02 scored 18 seconds later. Choate's defense was firing well and feeding an aggressive offensive attack. Choate remained in control as Marvin-Smith's tenacious play nabbed him three more in just under four minutes. Dailey put the ball in one more time to give Choate an 8-0 lead at the half. As Choate moved other players through the rotation, Williston started to bring things together. The visitors, with plenty of speed, scored twice in the first half of the third. Choate wanted to make its point though and Marvin-Smith laid in two more and Andrew Smith '01 added another to extend the lead to 11-2. Williston tallied once more with seconds remaining but Choate kept things in hand 11-3 at the final period break. An on-fire Greg Marvin-Smith added two more early in the fourth before stepping out of the game. Owen Dailey scored Choate's final goal with seconds remaining. In the interim, Williston came alive and took advantage off less organized personnel patterns to put in four of their own. Choate's defensive effort was strong. Robinson scored twice and a four meter, but nothing until the second half. Two other Williston players scored on the day. Williston is currently sitting 4th in the league rankings. Marvin-Smith's 9 goal outing ties him for the third best scoring performance ever. (In an interesting note, he tied Myles Ranier's 9 goal day against Williston on 10/25/95). Chris Beck had a strong day in cage with a final total of 16 saves and is another all-time list performance for Chris. Choate prepares next for Northfield at home before heading into their final week of play with games against the always challenging squads from Loomis (Wed.) and Deerfield and Andover (Sat.).

10/28/00: Northfield Mount Hermon at CRH Choate 15, NMH 5

It was Parents weekend at Choate when Northfield Mount Hermon faced the Boars for the second time this season, this time at the Larry Hart Pool. NMH is in a building year and working through a tough season. Choate was ready for a good game and a chance to showcase a lot of players for the partisan crowd. After a shaky start, the home team moved out to control the game and never looked back. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 got Choate on the board at 18 seconds into the game but a too-relaxed Choate defense allowed NMH to answer 24 seconds later to tie the game for the only time. Choate was working together a little better as they settled their game as the period progressed. Owen Dailey '02 and Captain Adam Rahal '01 added goals in the next minute and twenty seconds. As the period progressed, Marvin-Smith scored again, as did Dailey to extend the Choate lead to 5-1 at the end of the first. NMH managed only two shots in the period. As Choate cycled players, more got an opportunity to score. While Marvin-Smith scored first in the second, goals followed by Andrew Stowe '01, two by Brett Marinelli '03, two by newcomer Perry Bullock '04, one by Omar Itum '01 and one by Aaron Smith '01. NMH notched another during the period and the score at the half was 13-2 in favor of the home team. The third saw a lot of play back and forth with neither team able to develop a sound offensive set. The only scoring came on a penalty shot for NMH after a Choate defender was caught behind in near the cage. The largely defensive quarter ended 13-3 in favor of Choate. More changes in personnel in the fourth kept the game interesting. NMH managed a relative shooting onslaught, with 6 shots by #13. Mike Lane '01, stepping into cage, was huge and made 5 stops in the period. NMH scored twice in the period but Choate answered with goals of its own. Omar Itum scored again and Chris Beck '01 scored a strong goal from the field to close the game at a 15 &endash; 5 in favor of the home team. Choate's players will take a rest for the weekend but have a challenging week ahead. They will face defending NE runner-ups Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday and traditional rival Deerfield and an always-tough squad from Andover on Saturday.

11/1/00: Canterbury Varsity at CRH JV Choate JV 18, Canterbury 3

On Wednesday morning, Choate found out that Canterbury didn't have a pool available to play the game and the team switched gears quickly to save a day of play and host Canterbury. With part of the team off at Loomis and other players unable to compete, Choate had only nine players at the Hart Pool to face the visitors from New Milford. That was more than enough, though. A strong swimming Choate squad used speed and experience to take control from the start. Choate's players saw balanced time and took advantage of the opportunity to polish their play. Choate led 5-1 at the end of the first and 9-2 at the half. They continued to play a strong defensive game while extending the lead to 12-3 at the end of the third and finished the game ahead 18-3. Omar Itum led the scoring with 5. Aaron Smith '02 contributed 4 goals and Jacobo Chiu '02 and Perry Bullock '04 each added 3. Alex Wentworth-Ping '04 contributed two to the effort and Josh Ho-Walker '02 rounded out the scoring with a goal. Carey Turnquest '03 made a strong showing in cage with five saves in the 10 total shots that he faced. Choate also saw strong play from Adam Packer '01 and Drew Marvinsmith '04, who is just returning from a broken foot. The JV squad will close out a strong season on Saturday with a game against the nascent Cougar Aquatic Team water polo club.

11/1/00: CRH at Loomis Chaffee Choate 14, Loomis 8

Choate traveled to Loomis Chaffee to face the defending New England finalist for the second time this season. The game followed Choate's long weekend and the team struggled a bit at getting back into their game after the time off. Choate was not to be denied though, even in a game against an excited Loomis team coming off an impressive upset of Hotchkiss. The teams started with both squads getting settled in. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 got Choate on the board first and his goal was followed quickly by a nice score by Owen Dailey '02. Loomis responded quickly to move within one. Marvin-Smith demonstrated energetic and controlling play and netted two more before Loomis tallied again. The first ended with the score at 4-2 in favor of Choate. The second period demonstrated the defensive adjustments that the teams had made and too many miscues by Choate's offense. It took over half of the period before anyone got on the board and then it was Loomis narrowing the margin to one point. Aggressive perimeter play by Marvin-Smith allowed him two more and an assist for a goal by Dailey to reassert Choate's game and build a 7-3 lead at the half. No one was counting Loomis out, though. Loomis miscalculated on a defense that dropped off Brett Marinelli and he called for greater respect by netting one at 18 sec. into the third. Loomis scored on a man-up and then again to bring them back into the game. Captain Adam Rahal, who had been playing well all day, answered 17 seconds later. Owen Dailey then added another and Greg Marvin-Smith put in another to quickly extend the lead to six. In the final period, both teams seemed to lose some of energy but they played hard throughout. Loomis scored early but Dailey answered back on a man-up situation. Marvin-Smith added another score and Loomis answered that. Dailey scored Choate's final goal for the day before Loomis put the ball in one more time. The game ended with Choate ahead 14-8. Marvin-Smith had a stellar showing despite being marked by the opponents and scored 7 to earn another entry on the All-Time list and break the school single season scoring record. Owen Dailey had an exceptional day as well with five goals and strong defensive play. The combined team effort was strong and Chris Beck played well with 13 saves on the day. Choate will close its regular season on Saturday when traditional rival Deerfield comes to town a week before Deerfield Day. Andover will also be there and face Choate in another challenging game.

11/4/00: Cougar Aquatic Team at CRH JV Choate JV 13, CAT 5

The Choate JV closed out their season with a good game against the up and coming Cougar Aquatic Team club coached by Choate's girls coach, Bill Berghoff. The CAT squad includes many strong swimmers who are quickly developing water polo skills. Choate's strong JV squad sought to use their greater experience to their advantage, and did. Omar Itum '02 led the team out of the gate and scored twice in the opening minute. He followed this with two ejections, but Choate's defense killed the advantage situation. Choate then could not capitalize on its own man-up opportunities and the period ended with Choate ahead 2-0. CAT was not out of it at all, though, and scored in the first minute of the second to narrow the gap to 2-1. Perry Bullock '04 used his speed to go to work then and demonstrated the skills he has developed in his first year by scoring twice. Alex Wentworth-Ping '04 got on the board as well to give Choate a 5-1 lead at the half. Again in the third, CAT scored early. Most of the period saw a lot of back and forth as the two squads struggled to get things going. In the final 1:20, Choate opened things up, however. Itum scored again and Bullock added two more. Choate led 8-2 at the end of the third. In the final period, Choate's experience really came alive and they scored four times in the first minute and twenty seconds. Goals by Josh Ho-Walker '02, Itum, Bullock and Claude Giampietro '04 moved Choate to a 12-2 lead. CAT was not done, though. They added a third before Bullock tallied his 5th goal of the day. As the time waned, CAT added two more to make the final 13-5 for the home team. Carey Turnquest '03 made a fine showing in goal with 8 saves. CAT made a strong showing for a team that is starting out and it was a great experience for all.

11/4/00: Deerfield at CRH Choate 10, Deerfield 2

Traditional rival Deerfield returned to Choate for the second time this year ready to play and with a lot on the line. Deerfield has had a difficult season and a win would help them as they work to find a spot in the tournament. Choate wanted to be gracious, but was not willing to help out. Both teams worked to find their way through the first and frustrating play was seen on both sides. Choate Captain Adam Rahal '01 finally broke the ice at 1:30 into the game to give Choate the lead. Deerfield capitalized on a man-up opportunity a minute and a half later, though, to knot the score. That is the way the period ended. Rahal got the second started as well, scoring 12 seconds into the period. Choate couldn't capitalize on a man-up opportunity but Rahal came back again 40 seconds later and scored again. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 added another 18 seconds later to give Choate the 4-1 lead that they held at the half. Neither team could make anything of man-up opportunities and the game moved to half-time. The third period saw a lot of playing back and forth and sound defense by Choate. Goals by Marvin-Smith, Rahal, Andrew Smith '01 and Owen Dailey '02 extended Choate's lead to 8-1 at the end of the third. In the start of the fourth, Deerfield capitalized at the end of a man-up opportunity to score their second. Dailey and Smith would each add another as the game wound down to give Choate the 10-2 win. Chris Beck saw only seven shots and tallied 5 saves. The team then prepared to face Andover in the second game of the day.

11/4/00: Andover at CRH Choate 8, Andover 7

Choate knew that anything could happen as they went into the second game this season against Andover, who had matched up well against the Boars in a game earlier in the season. Andover looked to be resting as they played through to a 7-4 win against Deerfield following the Choate Deerfield game. Choate looked ready to play but was taking nothing for granted. Both teams came out hard but they struggled to put things together. It was halfway through the first when Andrew Stowe '01 converted a man-up opportunity to give Choate the lead. Andover used speed and excellent driving to respond almost immediately. Choate had good opportunities but couldn't seem to catch a break. Andover kept up the challenge and scored two more to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first. Choate has played some close games this season and was concerned but not panicked. Greg Marvin-Smith, Choate's leading scorer, managed to score, get kicked out and score again in less that 45 seconds. The teams battled for a while but Andover got back on the board to regain the lead with just less than two minutes remaining in the half. They scored again on a man-up opportunity to lead by two. Choate spent much of the day on the bad side of the calls and was frustrated at trailing 3-5 at the half. Owen Dailey '02 scored for Choate in the first minute off the third to move the Boars back within one. Choate missed two man-up opportunities but Stowe scored again to tie the game at 5. Choate suffered another kick-out and Andover scored again to regain the lead going into the final period. Marvin-Smith came out fired up and worked in two beautiful goals in the first 1:40 of the final period to give Choate the lead by one. Andover converted another Choate ejection to tie the game at 7 with 2:20 left in the game. The teams fought back and forth but Choate got the ball back with a minute left. The team tried to run something but had to improvise. In the resulting melee, and Andover player was ejected. Choate put the ball in play and Dailey had an effective, if not pretty, shot to give Choate the lead. Andover had 38 seconds but Choate controlled on defense to take the win. Chris Beck '01 had 5 saves in cage. It was not as they imagined it, but Choate comes out with it's 13th straight league win. The team will focus on preparing for the Final 8 Tournament that they will host next weekend.

11/11/00: Andover at Final 8's Choate 8, Andover 7

Choate had its closest game of the season a week ago against Andover and so the opening of the Final 8 tournament promised to be a challenging start. Andover has improved its play greatly over the season and was ready for a final run. Choate was a team on a mission, though. The team had won 15 straight games in the league and hadn't lost since the league opener. Despite having lost two starters to illness in the previous week, the reduced squad went after it. The teams came out with energy but also a little rough. Andover got on the board first capitalizing on a Choate ejection. Choate answered later in the period on a goal by Choate's captain Adam Rahal '01. The period ended in a 1-1 tie. Choate came roaring back in the second, though. Greg Marvin-Smith '01 took advantage of a man-up opportunity to put in his first of the day and followed it quickly with another. Andover took advantage of another Choate kick out with a goal but Marvin-Smith responded to complete the period hat trick. The half closed with Choate ahead 4-2. Jamie Lamere '02 tallied for Choate late in the third period to extend the lead to 5-3. Andover drew another ejection, though, and capitalized. Choate couldn't capitalize on the ejection that they drew and Andover scored with a second left to tie the game at 5-5. Greg Marvin-Smith converted a 4m on a foul drawn by Rahal to move Choate back into the lead early in the fourth. Choate failed to capitalize on a drawn ejection late in the period and gave up a goal to knot the score again. Both teams played for the win, but each defense rose up and the fourth ended in a tie. Choate had to kill an ejection in the first period of the overtime but neither team scored. Andover went ahead 37 seconds into the second overtime period. 11/11/00: Exeter at Final 8's Exeter 19, Choate 2

Choate opened the season with a game against defending Final 8 Champion and perennially unbeaten Exeter. They lost that game but didn't lose in the league again through the next 15 starts. Exeter was undefeated coming into the finals and had won its first round games by a combined score of 41-8. Choate went into the finals (where longer periods are played than earlier in the tournament) still without the benefit of two starters. Choate was ready to play and eager for a good note to end the season but ran into a buzz saw in the form of a riled up Exeter squad. Opening the finals much as Choate had opened against Loomis in the semi's, the team from New Hampshire went ahead 4-0 in the first 2:12 of the game. Choate was getting some opportunities but struggled to capitalize. A combination of bad shooting and the tremendous defensive effort by Exeter kept Choate in a bottle. Exeter led 5-0 at the end of the first and 10-0 at the half. Early in the third, Choate was able to capitalize on a defensive miss by Exeter. Aaron Smith '02 got the ball at point from Marvin-Smith and tagged a nice goal to get the home team on the board. Exeter's PG from California continued an amazing display and scored three goals in just over a minute. He scored twice more in the period to total 12 for the game. Exeter extended to 17-1 at the end of the third. Early in the fourth, Choate's exceptional freshman Tim Rausch '04, who had been playing a controlled, calm and effective game for much of the outing put the ball to the canvas. Exeter scored twice more as Choate struggled to mount an effective offense for the final push. The teams contested hard and Exeter was clearly the better squad on the day. Choate was pleased with the overall effort, though, and a great season.
